The pump shop at Heritage Home Hardware is the place to go, where they can service and repair well and spa pumps, and also supply any needed parts.

Known for their customer service and in-depth knowledge of products, staff at the building centre are happy to share advice and helpful tips.

It’s important to winterize your well pumps properly for the season, says Richard MacAloney, Manager, Heritage Home Hardware Building Centre. “You want to keep your pump in good working order and keep it from freezing and cracking,” he says.

This can be done by a homeowner or a professional, he notes.

The length of time it takes to do this and the cost involved varies from system to system, as everyone’s well pumps are hooked up in a different way.

These are the general steps:

  • Drain the well pump
  • Fill it with RV antifreeze
  • Store it in a warm place

For more in-depth, step-by-step instructions, MacAloney recommends this YouTube video, How to Winterize Your Pumps.

“By winterizing your pump, it protects it from freezing, but it also keeps the seals lubricated and prevents the internal components from rusting and flaking. In general, it helps prolong the life of your pump,” says the Manager.

The ideal time to do this would be the month of October, he notes. “That is a good time when people are closing their camps, and before the temperature drops below 0.”

The main problems that seem to befall well and spa pumps involve the seals and bearings; they’re the most common parts that need to be replaced. These are also typically special order products and vary widely by pump manufacturer.

“Keeping your pump serviced and well maintained, clean and dry, is the key to extending its life. If you are a homeowner and want to service your pump yourself, make sure you are well educated and know what you’re doing,” cautions MacAloney.

Customers are welcome to come into the store anytime during opening hours, which are 8-6 Monday-Friday, 8-5 on Saturday, and 10-5 on Sunday. There is no appointment needed, but the pump shop runs on a first come, first served basis.
