VIDEO: 'The tug is the drug,' says local fishing guide

'When you hook a fish and feel that thing pulling, there's nothing else'

This may be the first year of operations for Soo Steelheaders' guide service, but owner David Shuttleworth has been an avid angler most of his life.

Throughout his career in fishing, Shuttleworth has learned a great deal about catching several species of fish, but he prefers the challenge offered by Atlantic salmon or steelhead.

"It's what we're known for here in the Sault, the Atlantic salmon, there's only one reason why, and you have to hook one to find out."

Though he serves a wide swath of Algoma, his preferred hunting grounds are the fast-moving waters of the St. Mary's River.

"Because it's an urban setting, people don't think about it, but there's world-class fishing here," Shuttleworth said.

"People come from all over the world."

And that's good news for Shuttleworth, whose main focus is acquiring new clients.

Having only been in operation for a year, Shuttleworth has plenty of repeat clients but is always looking to expand his client list. He hopes to one day transition to full-time guide services.

"Right now, I have a full-time job, but full-time fishing . . . what else is there? That's the dream."

Shuttleworth plans to operate year-round, offering ice fishing tours as well a summer tours, but if you're looking to learn the ins and outs of fishing steelhead, spring and fall are the times to book.

If you're interested in getting out with Shuttleworth, visit his website or shoot him a message on Facebook or Instagram.
