Construction has started on the right turn lane on Second Line West at Goulais Avenue.
“The pre-utility work has been completed and the civil construction phase is now underway,” said Maggie McAuley, the city’s manager of design and transportation engineering.
The work began in early July and is anticipated to be completed, including all the post-utility work, by late fall.
Ellwood Robinson Inc. is doing the work.
“The cost for this project is approximately $650,000 which includes the city’s share of the utility cost,” McAuley said.
Earlier this year, the City of Sault Ste. Marie paid $705,000 for the building on the northeast corner of the block — then promptly tore it down, making way for whichever traffic-improving measure was chosen.
The city decided on the turn lane after considering a roundabout.
