This week, Prime Minister Mark Carney officially launched his plan to “supercharge” the construction of more affordable housing units in Canada.
Dubbed “Build Canada Homes,” the new federal agency will offer billions in financial incentives for developers to construct affordable housing at scale, prioritizing the use of modern, cost-effective methods such as modular, factory-built homes.
Opposition leaders have criticized the plan. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said Carney’s solution to the country’s housing shortage “is to add another bureaucracy that will only slow things down,” while interim NDP MP Jenny Kwan called the announcement “extremely disturbing.”
Back in April, just days before the federal election, Carney was asked about his housing agency pledge during an appearance on Village Media’s podcast.
“All of that money doesn't go to the government agency,” Carney said. “It goes to private developers who are going to be building this out. So for those listening: If you're a developer on housing, this is going to be a great time. We're going hard, hard, hard on this. And secondly, if you're younger and you want to get in the trades, we are going to build this country for the next quarter century plus. It is going to be a great time to be in the skilled trades. We're literally going to create thousands of not jobs, but careers."
