It was a successful day in Sudbury for a pair of high school football teams from the Sault on Saturday.
The St. Mary’s Knights junior and Korah Colts senior teams took the field in their respective Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) championship games at Sudbury’s James Jerome Sports Complex.
In the junior final, St. Mary’s captured the NOSSA title thanks to a 37-7 win over Sudbury’s Lo-Ellen Secondary School.
St. Mary’s advanced to the NOSSA final thanks to a city title win in which they beat Korah by a 35-7 margin.
The Knights went 5-1 in regular-season play and finished in top spot before grabbing a semifinal win over White Pines to advance to the city final.
In Saturday’s senior NOSSA final, Korah fell behind early before battling back and picking up a 55-35 win over Sudbury’s Confederation.
Both teams are slated to compete in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) football bowl series later this month, with the Colts entering the series as NOSSA champs.
After going 6-0 in regular-season play, Korah beat White Pines in the semifinal before beating St. Mary’s in the senior football final to earn the right to represent the Sault in the NOSSA senior final.
Confederation won the Sudbury city title and proceeded to beat Algonquin from North Bay in the NOSSA senior semifinal last weekend.
At OFSAA, Korah will play in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl on Nov. 26, where they will face the winner of the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SOSSA), which covers an area that includes the Hamilton and Niagara regions.
The SOSSA semifinal is scheduled for Nov. 13, with the championship game slated for Nov. 18.
