An original play set for Sault Theatre Workshop this week has been cancelled.

The Cabinet follows a troubled Finnish soldier who moves to Ontario after the Second World War to work as a private investigator.

The play was set to run from Oct. 29 through Nov. 2.

In a statement shared with SooToday, Calvin Lane from production company Unfathomable Horrors abruptly announced the show’s cancellation.

“It’s never easy walking away from something so many people care about,” Lane said.

“We have been incredibly lucky to have met so many wonderful people during the course of this production that it breaks our hearts to need to do this.”

Lane said The Cabinet “can no longer move forward” due to unspecified circumstances, and that refunds are available for ticket holders at the Sault Community Box Office.

When asked by SooToday, Lane didn't get into specifics on why the play was cancelled, but said "health issues" and "health and safety issues" were contributing factors to the decision.

"It's a shame that we had to end it so abruptly," he said. "Everything that went down happened very, very shortly beforehand."

Lane said the cast is on good terms, and that upcoming Unfathomable Horrors shows should go off with no issues.

He also hopes to see The Cabinet run at a later date.

“We're hoping to make something happen with it still," Lane said.

"We don't know if it'll be before the year's over, or early in 2026, but the story is definitely not dead.”
