Algoma University bar The Speakeasy is one of the stops on Quit It!’s coast-to-coast tour in support of its third album, Through The Debris.

Calgary punk band Quit It! has been making a name for itself as the torchbearers of "socio-political anthemic punk”. Quit It! harnesses the power of collective voices to ignite a chorus of critical thought, accountability, and hope.

With Through the Debris, Quit It! doubles down on its commitment to DIY culture, as the album will be released only on Bandcamp and vinyl, through its label, Outhouse Records.

Quit It! played Sled Island in Calgary this past June, and CJSW DJ Kaamil Kareemi had the opportunity to speak with band members Mikey Blotto (drums and vocals), and Tyler Burton (bass and vocals). Blotto very succinctly summarized what the band’s ethos is, and what drives them these days.

“You know, like, it’s extremely important to hold power and hold accountability to people in power, especially right now. What’s going on in the world right now? It seems pretty insane and crazy, and we all have a platform to use our voices, and a lot of people in power using that platform against us,” said Blotto.

He continued, “So I think everyone has to kind of chip in and promote their ideologies, especially if they’re, you know, based around peace and prosperity and community, right? And a lot of people are trying to rip that away from us. So, I think it’s very important right now that musicians and artists speak with a loud voice about holding power and holding accountability to people in power.”

Burton added, “I think we all have feelings that we love to express. And on this latest record, it was just basically writing your anger down and then putting it into a song, right?”

With tracks like Bad Ideas, Don’t be a Jerk, and God Complex, Quit It!’s third album takes unflinching aim at the madness in the world these days, with elements of hope, anger, and in the end, a rallying cry for a world on fire.

Lucky ticket holders will have the chance to see this stage-commanding band up close and personal, and feel the power they bring to communities with every show they do.

Quit It! is playing The Speakeasy October 19. Doors are at 6 and the band plays at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for students and $15 general admission and can be purchased online here.

Quit It! harnesses the power of collective voices to ignite a chorus of community empowerment, critical thought, and a touch of chaos. If "sociopolitical anthemic punk” ignites a fire in your belly, then this is for you. Don’t miss it!
