No injuries after bullet comes through ceiling in an apartment

An investigation revealed the accused discharged a firearm through the floor of his unit and into the unit below, police said

Yesterday Sault police officers arrested a man after a gunshot went through the ceiling of an apartment building in the 800 block of Wellington Street East at around 10:30 a.m.

Officers located the accused near the building and determined the disturbance occurred in his unit.

A search of the unit located a bullet hole in the floor – which had gone through the ceiling of the unit below – a shotgun, and ammunition, police said in a news release.

An investigation revealed the accused had discharged a firearm through the floor of his unit and into the unit below, police said.

Although the unit was occupied, no physical injuries were reported. 

Nathan Haefele-McLea, 35, was arrested. He’s charged with:

  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device, or Ammunition
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Weapon
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x6
  • Possession of Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Reckless Discharge of Firearm – Life or Safety
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of Weapon

Haefele-McLea was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty.
