A local youth theatre group is putting on its next show this weekend.
Soo-lebrity Theatre is performing a series of five one-act comedies in a show they are calling Side Effects May Include at the Korah Theatre from Oct. 24-26.
In December, the youth theatre group performed Just Claus, an elaborate Christmas production.
Michael Duclos, Soo-lebrity Theatre president, said the new show is scaled down a little, but it still offers a chance for the young performers to shine and practice their comedy chops.
"We had a lot of kids sign up for the development classes and then everyone was like, 'Are we going to do a show?' and I said, 'Sure, but I I don't want to do a big show this time,'" said Duclos.
At least one of the one-act plays that will be performed in the show, called Drugs are Bad, is very familiar to Duclos.
"I acted in Drugs Are Bad when I was a teenager. I played the role of dad in that play and I have loved the script ever since," Duclos said.
"The play is kind of like an after school special, where the parents are actually trying to convince the teenage son to do bad things as a bit of reverse psychology," he added.
That play was written by Jonathan Rand, as is Check Please 1, 2 and 3, which is also featured in the show.
Poison, Passion and Petrifaction, a 1905 short play by George Bernard Shaw, will round out the show. Soo-lebrity actors will perform an updated version of it, adapted by D. Daynard.
The plays will be directed by Duclos and Kirsten Duke.
"I just found some funny scripts and I thought we would try to put them together under one theme, and here we are," said Duclos.
The Soo-lebrity development classes are split in groups, one for kids between the ages of seven and 11 and another for children 12 and older.
"It's a good range of kids and at this point . . . more like a family. It's just such a great dynamic and I really love doing it," said Duclos.
The intention of the theatre group is to offer low-cost opportunities for youth interested in the performing arts.
"There's so many opportunities for kids in the Sault who love sports, but in terms of the kids that aren't really athletic or don't really love sports, there's not that much to do that is affordable," said Duclos.
Evening shows will be held Friday and Saturday, with a matinee on Sunday. Tickets are available by emailing [email protected] or contacting Mike Duclos at 867-447-4950.
