TORONTO — Toronto police say five people are facing charges after a group of protesters allegedly forced their way into a private event, damaged property and made those in attendance fear for their safety.

Police say the incident occurred on Wednesday at a downtown building near Elm and Bay streets.

They allege that one person sustained injuries from glass broken in the forced entry and that some of the accused either obstructed or assaulted police officers.

Police did not provide any details about the nature of the protest, but a Toronto Metropolitan University student group called Students Supporting Israel said an off-campus event it organized was targeted.

The student group said it was hosting Israeli soldiers for the private event and it posted videos of the broken glass, bloody cuts on a person's arm and shouting inside the room.

Five people ranging in age from 21 to 29 were arrested and individual charges against them include forcible entry, obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer.
