Jeffrey Wright is bringing country music and education to students at Echo Bay Central Public School in November.

Students in Echo Bay will get the chance to go to a country concert this November – and learn a few things along the way.

Local musicians Jeffrey Wright and Meggy Lee will be at Echo Bay Central Public School on Nov. 28 to teach youth about country legends Johnny Cash and June Carter in a unique performance that will be one part concert and one part history lesson.

Helping the next generation of country music fans get into the genre is one of the big things Wright is looking forward to with the performance.

“Lots of people still like Johnny Cash, but as time goes on, it's going to fade,” Wright told SooToday.

“A big part of keeping that older generation of music alive is to bring it to younger audiences as if they're discovering it brand new.”

Students will learn about the history of the music, the instruments, and what life was like back in Cash and Carter’s days.

Wright will play songs from his upcoming tribute concert, Hurt: A Tribute to the Legend, Johnny Cash, set for the Sault Community Theatre on Jan. 24.

For Wright, who regularly puts on country shows in the area, next month’s performance – combining teaching and playing – is a new type of show he’s never done before.

But when the elementary school’s principal suggested the idea, Wright jumped at the chance.

“She likes Johnny Cash, and saw me performing with my band, and then she wondered if there's a way to get me to come in to do a Johnny Cash tribute,” he said.

Those interested in attending Wright’s January Johnny Cash tribute can find tickets here.
