For long-time Sault Ste. Marie pharmacist Sam DeSumma, Market Mall IDA has always been more of a second home than a workplace.
It all began in the 1960s, when Joe Disano first opened the doors to what quickly became a west-end favourite. DeSumma joined him as a pharmacy student in 1987, working under Disano’s guidance before officially stepping into the role full-time in 1994.
“He was my employer, but he became my friend and mentor,” DeSumma said. “Joe taught me not only how to be a pharmacist, but how to treat people with kindness and respect.”
That approach has been a hallmark of the store ever since.
From helping newcomers in their own language to offering a moment to listen, the staff at Market Mall IDA have earned a reputation for their compassion and connection. Those are values DeSumma says reflect the ethic of the west end itself.
“Growing up with immigrant parents, I felt a special connection with customers who were new to the area,” he said. “I understood their challenges and took pride in helping them feel at home.”
Now, as the pharmacy moves back to its original location at 275 Second Line West, DeSumma says it feels like things have come full circle. The new space is bright, modern, and thoughtfully designed — a welcoming blend of tradition and innovation.
“I feel very lucky to have practiced pharmacy in the same area I grew up,” he said.
“The people in this area have trusted me and my team to manage their medications, and I feel truly blessed having done so for over 30 years at the Market Mall. I have yet to meet finer people than the people in the west end of Sault Ste. Marie.”
For DeSumma, the pharmacy’s success has always been about connection with people — the customers who stop in for advice, the neighbours who stop by to catch up and the IDA team members whose dedication and spirit has shaped the store’s values for generations.
He credits that team — past and present — for creating an environment built on trust, loyalty and care.
“Their compassion and commitment have made this pharmacy what it is,” DeSumma said.
