NEWS RELEASE
SHOT IN THE DARK
************************
Shot in the Dark is thrilled to announce that it has officially obtained the rights to produce Come From Away, the internationally acclaimed Canadian musical.

Come From Away is an award-winning Broadway success that has toured around the world and won over audiences with its humour and heart. This landmark play will be performed in Algoma for the first time when the theatre company brings it to life next year on stage at the Sault Community Theatre Centre.

Written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, and developed through workshops at Sheridan College, Come From Away tells the inspiring true story of 7,000 stranded airline passengers and the small Newfoundland town of Gander that welcomed them in the aftermath of 9/11.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring this incredible piece of Canadian theatre to Sault Ste. Marie,” said Anthony Aceti, artistic director of Shot in the Dark.

“It’s a musical that embodies the compassion and creativity that makes us proud to be Canadian. Northern Ontario audiences especially will resonate with its message: a small town opening up its doors to welcome newcomers.

"That’s definitely going to be poignant for many of us. To be able to do a show like this with local actors, musicians and crew, and perform it for our friends and neighbours will definitely be something special," Aceti said.

The musical is a Tony Award–winning global phenomenon, with tours across North America and Europe and translated versions of the show available in Korean, Dutch, Japanese and Spanish. Two different productions were popular with Toronto audiences in Mirvish theatres from 2018 to 2020, and again in the 2024 season.

Shot in the Dark’s sold-out production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company recently finished a successful run at The Loft on Nov. 1.

“It’s a bit of a whirlwind going from one production closing,” said Aceti, “and then right into the planning stages for the next, but this show is so brilliant and so important to us that it’s all worthwhile.

“Securing the rights through Music Theatre International (MTI) is a major milestone for us as a theatre company. This show has touched audiences worldwide, and we’re proud to make Sault Ste. Marie part of its ongoing story.”

Shot in the Dark’s production is planned for the upcoming 2026 theatre season. More details about audition dates, performance dates and ticket sales will be shared soon via social media channels.
