BRUCE MINES – The Bruce Mines Historic Trails have been selected to share in $104,000 in grant money from RTOERO (the Retired Teachers of Ontario, soon to be Entente Education Canada) to help enhance and maintain the trails.

It's one of 26 community projects in Ontario and British Columbia to receive this funding.

In Algoma the Bruce Mines Trailblazers plan to use the $4,000 to improve signage and accessibility, add amenities such as benches, and preserve the rich mining history that makes the site unique.

“The Bruce Mines Trailblazers have created a gathering place where residents of all ages and abilities can enjoy the outdoors, learn about local history and feel a sense of belonging. With this grant, we’re helping to ensure the trails remain an inspiring source of recreation, education and well-being for years to come,” says Wayne Greco, president, District 3 Algoma, RTOERO, in a news release.

A committee of RTOERO members assesses the merits of each grant submission. Projects touch on everything from environmental sustainability, to healthy and accessible communities. Since the inception of the community grants program 25 years ago, RTOERO has donated almost $2.2 million to more than 600 programs and projects.

“Our members have always been deeply engaged in the places they call home. Through the grants program, they’re able to extend that spirit of service and ensure meaningful initiatives receive the support they need to thrive,” says John Cappelletti, chair of the board at RTOERO.

District 3 Algoma includes almost 1,300 members and stretches east from Sault Ste. Marie to Spanish and Elliot Lake, and north to Wawa, Hornepayne and Chapleau. The district plays a key role in helping members stay engaged and connected, with each other and the community.
