Foodies in Sault Ste. Marie are testing out a bold new item on the local restaurant scene.

Fat Bastard Burrito has settled into the city, attracting customers with its large portions, customizable meals, and quirky new flavours. It’s a recipe that might just redefine the idea of your standard burrito.

At the helm of Fat Bastard Burrito is a managing partner Ravi, who oversees the operation. He says he’s focussed on three things: providing great customer service, offering delicious meals and connecting with the community. Since taking over the helm two years ago, the restaurant has become known for its big-size burritos, interesting desserts, and a menu that caters to everything from vegan diets to high-protein lifestyles.

“We want people to walk in and feel they’re in a good environment, a friendly environment,” Ravi said. “Even just looking around the store, it gives a good vibe. But most of all, people are surprised by the quantity — the burritos are huge.”

In the Soo, with a population that’s been starving for diverse food options, Fat Bastard Burrito has carved out a niche by offering both indulgent and health-conscious meals. The menu offers plenty — from tacos, quesadillas, and burrito bowls to gluten-friendly, vegan, and vegetarian options.

Customers can customize almost anything at Fat Bastard Burrito— they can choose protein like beef, chicken, fish, or tofu, or other toppings, sauces, and sides. One of the biggest draws, Ravi said, is the ability to “make every burrito your own.”

And while the size of the Fat Bastard burritos often surprises first-time visitors, two menu items also spark their curiosity: the cheesecake burrito and the fish tacos.

Tortoise Burgers and Spicy Chicken Nacho Soup are also the latest offerings from the shop.

“For me, my favourites are the fish tacos and protein punch bowls,” Ravi said.  They are incredible.”

But for Ravi, success is not just about filling orders— even if it’s for some of the tastiest dishes in northern Ontario. Success in the food industry means giving back.

A lifelong cricket fan, Fat Bastard Burrito has partnered with the Sault Ste. Marie Cricket Club to support local sport and create community ties.

“Back home, we love to play cricket and watch cricket,” he said. “Here, it brings our community together. There are so many immigrants [in the Soo], and with so many of us coming from different places, it’s sometimes hard to find and connect with friends or your loved ones. But cricket is a way to meet our people, play together, and stay connected.”

Fat Bastard Burrito also taps into Sault Ste. Marie’s hockey culture through promotions tied to the OHL. Workout buffs can also benefit from a special deal with Good Life Fitness and Fit For Less. People who hold memberships with those clubs can qualify to get extra protein on their bowls or big burritos for a limited time.

“We’re always interested in getting the word out about Fat Bastard Burrito,” Ravi said. “So these promotions are just about reaching people and letting them know we’re here in the Soo.”

While Fat Bastard Burrito’s core menu remains a staple, new items are introduced from time to time to keep things fresh. Recently, the franchise added empanadas, power bowls, and new salsa varieties like pineapple and salsa verde.

The power bowls, Ravi said, are designed for workout buffs or anyone on low-carb or high-protein diets.

“Those are for people who really want to focus on their health,” he said. “They come with exact calories and portions, so it’s easy to see what you’re eating.”

But at the end of the day, Sault Ste. Marie is more than just a place to run a business, Ravi said. After studying at Sault College and settling in the city, he now calls it his second home.

“The environment here is peaceful, and it feels like back home,” he said. “People are friendly, kind, and helpful. We try to give that same kindness back to them.”

And as Fat Bastard Burrito becomes one of the best burrito places in the city, Ravi hopes the restaurant becomes more than a spot for big helpings — he wants it to be part of the community’s fabric.

“We try to do more, and one day we’d love to do things like food giveaways,” he said. “Right now we’re focused on building steady, but the goal is always to give back.”

Fat Bastard Burrito aims to offer something for everyone. Customers can visit the Churchill Plaza — there’s plenty of parking, Ravi said — or order ahead through the Fat Bastard Burrito app, or grab takeout on the go.

The restaurant invites customers to "hand-craft your own perfect meal, fast, fresh and f---ing delicious." All proteins are freshly prepared in-house, pico de gallo and salsas are made daily, and the signature guac—crafted from Mexican-grown avocados—comes free with every burrito or bowl. Whether you're diving into loaded burritos, high-protein bowls, tacos, quesadillas or finishing off with a sweet dessert, there’s bold flavour in every bite.
