The Sault Climate Hub consists of a local group of citizens who have consistently taken action to address Sault Ste. Marie’s fight against climate change.
The Sault Climate Hub was founded in 2019 with support from the Crane Institute for Sustainability. It is a non-partisan, citizen-led group dedicated to advancing climate change mitigation, with the goal of aligning Sault Ste. Marie with global greenhouse gas reduction targets.
Most recently, as a part of their Little Forests project, the hub planted its first mini-forest at East View Public School, using dense native species to rebuild canopy cover, support biodiversity, and create a living outdoor classroom. The forest is being stewarded by both students and community volunteers.
The group has also hosted a regular webinar series, available on YouTube, that brings experts and local voices together to discuss climate and environmental issues. It also produces a quarterly newsletter to keep residents engaged and informed.
This year, the Sault Climate Hub has been recognized as a deserving recipient of the Environment Award for the SooToday Community Builders Awards, presented by Heritage Home Hardware. This recognition highlights the group’s tireless work to educate, inspire and drive meaningful change in the community.
“It’s really nice to get recognition for the work that we do,” shared Ted McPherson, chair of the Sault Climate Hub when he was told about the award win.
“We feel that what we do is very important, and even though we’re making a small difference, we’re trying to do things to help future generations,” he said.
Every project reflects the hub’s belief that solutions to the climate crisis must be rooted in both education and community involvement. By creating spaces for conversation and by showing residents how they can take part in local climate solutions, the Sault Climate Hub has become a driving force for change.
The Environment award recognizes an individual or group for their meaningful and positive contributions to the environment, both man-made and natural. Their efforts may include private initiatives, such as designing an innovative energy-efficient home, or public projects, such as leading a re-greening initiative.
Recipients share the common trait of demonstrating what is achievable in reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable development within the community.
Congratulations to The Sault Climate Hub!
